Safety

The seven key indicators in this section provide safety statistics and highlight community safety within Midland County.  This is a very important indicator for communities, as it a heavily researched statistics used by real estate agents, job seekers, and persons doing research on a particular community.  Much of the data is important to create a "factual picture" of community identity about being safe.  Interesting trends are:
  • Midland County is a very safe community.  Violent crimes are very rare.
  • Other than Whites, ethnic populations are too small to measure in Midland.  Females commit about 2% of violent crimes.
  • The data can be misleading since it measures arrests, convictions are more difficult to measure since persons can be charged for multiple offenses but only convicted in one.
  • Suicide rates remain difficult to measure since it depends on hospitals, police, and other agencies to determine intent.
  • Education levels of the population in Midland County have a positive impact in reducing violence.
  • Midland County must continue to improved economic and living conditions, which will reduce the likelihood of children being abused in their homes.
  • Reducing unintentional deaths and accidents can not only reduce the loss of life, but also the costs of medical care, rehabilitation, and lost income and productivity.
  • Unintentional injuries are complex involving many different sectors of society. A reduction in injuries requires the combined efforts of many fields, including health care, education, transportation, law, engineering, and safety.
  • According to the 2011 Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors Midland County Adolescent Developmental Assets Study conducted by the Legacy Center for Community Success, evidence showed that with increased assets, a significant reduction in Social Risk-Taking Behaviors occurred between 2006 and 2011, which corroborated the reduction in juvenile crime and arrests during the same time in Midland, Michigan.
